[Gdal-dev] gdalinfo - color table issue

"gdalinfo input.tif" prints a color table with all elements  set to 0,0,0 .
input.tif is a GTiff satellite image
However, when I look at the image info using ImageMagick the color table is
not even close to these values.
Any idea on what could be happening?
I am trying to compose images of this type into one world image and whenever
I use merge_gdal.py -pct input1.tif input2.tif output.tif, the image
output.tif is all black. I originally thought the problem was the color
table was not stored properly in the GTiff image, but I am confused now.
