Hey, it's only almost 2007... :)

Incidentally, just in case any windows developers out there aren't aware
of this, Microsoft have decided to make the express editions of Visual
Studio 2005 free on a permanent basis (originally it was just going to
be for a year but they changed their minds). The express editions seem
to have virtually everything in them that the solo developer needs,
including the same optimizing compilers that are available in all the
other versions. The IDE is actually pretty cool once you get into it.
