[Gdal-dev] possible to update gdal from mac os x binary dist?

I have gdal installed with the binary distribution of GRASS6 for Mac OS X (Tiger).  Problem is, the gdal version is 1.2.6, but the rgdal geostats package for R I want to install requires at least version 1.3.1.  Is it possible to update gdal without re-building all of grass from source?  if so...how?
