If I do not misunderstood, you wrote that mask should be of type GDT_Byte.
Why limit to GDT_Byte ? For exemple MODIS QA bands can be of type GDT_UInt16
(http://edcdaac.usgs.gov/modis/qa/mod09gq_qa_v5.asp). I know that you are
not implementing HDF yet, but if you do it in a future, you might have to
make changes to allow this. I recognize that this is a very specific case
and is not necessary for the first purposes of your project.
