Hi Mario,

GDAL does support Hdf 4 and 5. See:

If you can't see it by running:

gdalinfo --formats

Is because the way your GDAL package was build.

HDF support is optional and requires the HDF4/5 dynamic libraries from 
hdfgroup.org.

I think you should try the FWTools from maptools.org. It comes with a 
pre-compiled GDAL distribution that support HDF4 and HDF5.
