Nate,
Briefly responding:
1) Previously the GDAL project did *not* produce binaries to correspond with
releases. We are starting work on this, but it does not currently
include builds with Python.
2) FWTools is not release oriented - it is tied to the development trunk, and
is only produced for one Python version - usually not the most recent. It
is not a product of the GDAL project, but rather a thing of my own. With
very little time to work on it, I am generally not very receptive to "won't
you build it with my version of python/c++ compiler/etc".
3) I think Mateusz has been recently looking into building GDAL for win32
with Python 2.4. Perhaps he will provide a status update, and this will
make it into the wiki for others who want to build it.
4) Howard has indicate an interest in producing a python-gdal package
installer for win32. This might be for Python 2.4, but will only
happen as his time and interest permit.
I am interested in making "core binaries" for win32 part of the funded
GDAL maintainer workload, but it isn't at all clear that this will include
Python packages.
Best regards,
