I can see that you don't have one of those files, but since you mentioned:

W100N40.GIF - Shaded Relief Image
W100N40.HDR - Header File
W100N40.PRJ - Projection File
W100N40.SCH - Source Map Header File
W100N40.SRC - Source Map
W100N40.STX - Statistics File

Not sure what could be taken as AUX file by GDAL.
