Alison,

This is not the libtiff support list.  I'd encourage you to join and
ask there.

Libtiff is widely used on the Mac, but there is no "wide string" version of
the open available for the Mac.  With a bit of savvy i'd imagine you could
adapt the win32 version to macos and submit an appropriate patch to the
libtiff bugzilla.
