[Gdal-dev] History of Java support...

Hi,

I'm curious as to the state of the Java bindings support for GDAL.  It 
looks like as of 1.4.2, it is considered unsupported.  I'm looking for 
insights as to why:  is it as simple as "no one has stepped up to the 
plate", or more complex like "folks have found the performance under 
java to be too slow/unstable/..."?   I'm very interested in using the 
GDAL API with Java, and would consider supporting it if its simply a 
matter of a volunteer.  But I'd certainly like to hear about why Java is 
not more actively promoted presently.
