I've had good luck with Centos 5 . I usually compile form source, but
there are precompiled rpms for gdal 1.4.2 in the Fedora EPEL repositories
, see http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/EPEL , which should work fine for Red
Hat 5 and Centos 5 32 bit and 64 bit. I am not sure which formats are
available with those binaries.

You might want to consider using Fedora 6, 7, or 8 or Ubuntu 7.04 or
7.10 as there are binaries already compiled at:
