I believe Andrea no longer had the time/interest to pursue the Java
bindings.  I would be pleased to have you and/or Daniele take on the task.
There isn't really any official designation as maintainer for a particular
binding so it is more of a convention or understanding.

Since neither of you are currently have commit priveledges, you can start
by submitting fixes via Trac.  After a few of these we can raise a motion
to add grant commit priveledges.
