I should provide some background.

I have an ERDAS Imagine file of 19 Gigabytes that I want to import
into ERMapper. Two other files (next largest size is 16 Gigabytes)
imported okay. I only have problems with the last image.

The top half of the image is fine. The lower half is all black.

My supplier can view the entire image at his end.

I used ArcMap to open the image at my end and it is fine.

This confirms that the file itself is okay.

I downloaded GDAL v1.5 and used gdal_translate to go from
ERDAS Imagine format to ERMapper format as I stated in my
previous message.

The processing has now finished, and the result is the same error
of the lower half of the image being all black.

So, GDAL is giving the same results for me as ERMapper does. But
ArcMap displays it fine.

Excuse me, I just thought of something.

Okay, back again. I zoomed in with ArcMap, and after a while, the
screen went all black. ERDAS Imagine has pyramid layers right? Is
my problem that the pyramid layers are displaying fine but the
lowest layer is bad? Is ArcMap initially displaying the pyramid
layers whilst ERMapper and GDAL ignore the pyramid layers to
access the raw data?

Regards,
nick
