Nick,

You could try using gdal_translate to extract a full-res
small geographic window of the incoming Imagine file and the
ERS/BIL to confirm the pixels hold data.

  Personally I think files of 16 to 19 gb are risky, as lot
of apps will not open them.  You may want to use a multi
file tiling scheme.
