I can update to CVS, but it would be nice to have a new beta package
so there is some defined reasonably stable point in the source.

Yeah, I've received a few requests for it myself for my OSX binaries ;)

According to Frank, the doc build option in the source is not really
meant for public consumption. I had problems getting doxygen working
reliably on OSX (something about some extra bits for doxygen needed by
GDAL?). Frank has been providing premade doc packages as a separate
zip download since 1.3.
