One option could be to simply convert the shapefile into GMT format.

# -fid 0 keeps the GMT file small
ogr2ogr -f GMT yourfile.gmt yourfile.shp -fid 0

You'll find something like this in the GMT file:
# @Jp"+proj=longlat +ellps=GRS80 +no_defs "
