BTW, the problem is not that I'm getting incorrect results with GDAL.
The library I work on uses wkt, not proj4 parameter strings. I'm getting
this particular wkt string from a spatialite database which uses GDAL
(and epsg_tr.py) to generate the wkt strings. Since the wkt is telling
our software to use 'mercator_1sp/wgs-84' I'm getting incorrect results.
