[gdal-dev] Problems working with data from USGS's "National Map" of NED elevation data

I am having difficulty downloading and working with NED elevation rasters
the USGS publishes via it's "National Map."

Does anyone know how to:

1: Schedule a download of all the elevation tiles in a particular state?

2: Convert the ArcGrid files provided by the system into TIF or DEM files
that gdal can use to create hillshade, slopeshade and color relief?
