Wouldn't Area() as described in
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/geometry-property-
functions.html#function_area do the job ?

$ ogrinfo mysql:autotest -sql "SELECT Area(GeomFromText('Polygon((0 0,0 3,3
0,0 0),(1 1,1 2,2 1,1 1))'))"
INFO: Open of `mysql:autotest'
      using driver `MySQL' successful.

Layer name: sql_statement
Geometry: None
Feature Count: 1
Layer SRS WKT:
(unknown)
Area(GeomFromText('Polygon((0 0,0 3,3 0,0 0),(1 1,1 2,2 1,1 1))')): Real
(23.0)
OGRFeature(sql_statement):0
  Area(GeomFromText('Polygon((0 0,0 3,3 0,0 0),(1 1,1 2,2 1,1 1))')) (Real) =
4
