I just installed the latest gdal-version (1.10.1). But it did not solve 
my problems. I still get the same error while trying to display the min 
and max.

Use qgis to view the input and output. GIMP can't
> handle anything except basic pixel types.
But with qgis I can visualize my original large EU_DEM-files. :)
