...while gdaltindex utility http://www.gdal.org/gdaltindex.html that is also
a mosaic builder can deal with datasets in different projections. However,
this utility is specially made to create index files for Mapserver.

Hmm, I have loads of tileindex mosaics created with gdaltindex in shapefile
and Spatialite format, would be nice if I could utilize them also directly
with GDAL. I wonder it there is already a feature request about this.
