Can you use these tileindices with the -tileindex option to gdalbuildvrt?
Perhaps not if they are in different projections...

I agree this would be very useful, almost like having a tile index as a GDAL
data source.  There is a related feature request here
<http://trac.osgeo.org/gdal/ticket/5762>.
