[gdal-dev] cmake status query

Every time I build GDAL on Windows I have lots of pain as I need to build
for debug, release, x86 and x64.

Having looked in the list archives I noticed that there has been some
experiments with using cmake.

What would be required to adopt cmake build system?

Why did the previous attempt fail to be completed?
