Unfortunately, I did not see earlier that you fixed https://trac.osgeo.org/gdal/ticket/6503 in trunk.
(Seems I have to add myself to cc also for tickets reported by me, if I want to follow them?)

Not sure if I manage to recover my old Windows build environment, in order to test the changes on Windows. In case I should work: I would be very happy if the geometry-type-bug-fix could be included in the next 2.1 release...
