You probably don't need to do something particular regarding >/dev/null, as 
the error message from the compiler should probably be a few lines around in 
the console in the non-libtool compilation step.

I've tried to reproduce with an as close possible setup (Ubuntu 16.04.1 + gcc 
(Ubuntu 5.4.0-6ubuntu1~16.04.2) 5.4.0 20160609 + today trunk) and this 
compiles fine for me.
