You have to determine if it comes from GDAL itself or its integration in GMT.
For example, does that happen with gdalinfo on a geotiff file with the 3.1.1 
build ? FYI, Travis-CI builds of GDAL 3.1.1 with its autotest suite on OSX are 
fine.
Try using Valgrind
