UNMC Environmental Seminar Series

The UNMC School of Geography<http://www.nottingham.edu.my/Geography/index.aspx> is pleased to host a series of lectures on topical environmental issues through which we hope to raise public awareness and interest. This programme is aimed at the general public and assumes no expert or prior knowledge. Admission is free and light refreshments will be served.

The next lecture will take place on Saturday 25 May from 10.30am – 12.00pm at the Kuala Lumpur Teaching Centre. This lecture will be given by Dr. Tuong Thuy Vu, Associate Professor of the School of Geography at UNMC.

Open-Source Geospatial Solutions for Environmental Management
The awareness of Open-Source Geospatial (OSGEO) Solutions is increasing in Malaysia With a number of recent movements towards OSGEO solutions in public and private organisations. To support teaching, training and research in this area The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC) established the OSGEO research lab, the first of its kind in Southeast Asia, in late 2011 followed by similar effort at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM).

The presentation will report on the recent developments of international OSGEO research lab networks. It will also illustrate the deployment of OSGEO solutions in environmental management via selected examples from OSGEO-UNMC, including deforestation mapping, urban change detection, ecological mapping and crowd-sourcing data collection for agricultural research. OSGEO-UNMC is expanding and contributing to the development of OSGEO in Malaysia and the region.

About Dr. Vu
Dr Tuong Thuy Vu is Associate Professor and Head of the Open-Source Geospatial Research Lab, School of Geography, University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus.
Dr Vu has over 10-year teaching and research experience in the field. Dr Vu was a lecturer of Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden before joining University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus in 2011. He’s currently leading and participating in a number of research projects developing open-source geospatial solutions for various applications.
