[Ica-osgeo-labs] European Space Agency - ESA ARTES 20

Ela,

You suggest that we “Do something with the European Space Agency - ESA ARTES 20 programme” https://artes-apps.esa.int/artes-20-iap-overview

Great suggestion! And the open source web version of NASA World Wind platform is there to facilitate any geospatial display. Whether it’s labs, academia or industry that needs a browser based virtual globe platform to delivery their data in compelling and innovative ways, the heavy lifting for delivering that virtual world is freely available.

My favorite ‘feature’ is the MultiWindow. These windows can be synched, so the same movement in one window, i.e., with 3D, can be seen in another window, i.e., as 2D Mercator. And 2D still has the terrain, so it may be a square world but not a flat one! No more need to overlay multiple transparencies, just show each one next to the other in their own world.

Suchith, Charlie, as you work on new proposal ideas please take into account this option coming from European Space Agency - ESA ARTES 20 programme (https://artes-apps.esa.int/artes-20-iap-overview). It is focused on development of so called integrated applications - operational services for a wide range of users based on combination of different space-assets: satellite communications, earth observation, satellite navigation, etc. As ESA supports only 50% of all costs, services/applications developed should have their "business plan" to maximize their cost-effective implementation. So cooperation with a business/industry client is inevitable :-)

Best regards,
Ela

Helena, this is great idea and let us follow up these ideas by email and also at our meetings in Como. It is great timing that Charlie and his family are now here at Nottingham for the next two months and i will get opportunity to work closely with him to develop many ideas/research grant proposals etc to expand GeoforAll.

Best wishes,

Suchith

I'm currently in Nottingham working with Suchith. I've noted this as an important discussion topic for our meeting(s) in Como. . More on that agenda in the next month.

Cheers,

Charlie

Suchith,

in Portland we discussed the importance of working with industry, non-profit organizations,

and others outside academia and government.

OSGeo Labs Network industry partners membership was suggested among other things -

we can continue this discussion in Como and prepare there a proposal to get some feedback

from the members. This would be a good way to give recognition to companies that provide

fellowships for students or organize and fund code sprints where students from the labs participate.

This would allow the industry work with multiple labs or across the entire geo4all initiative,

rather than a single lab.

For others on the list - we will call for feedback, specific examples of collaboration with industry

and your ideas after FOSS4G Europe in Como when we will have the outline written up on wiki.

best regards, Helena
