Welcome Lorrain and thank you for joining and introducing you and your university activities in OSGeo.

I looked at Wikipedia and your university student numbers are impressive (over 70000 undergraduates!)  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universidad_Veracruzana

It will be great if you can inform colleagues there on the various QGIS teaching materails available so they can use these resources. For example, colleagues at GeoAcademy in the United States have  developed the introductory curriculum (lecture materials, tutorials etc) which is also free for all to share and share alike under the Creative Commons BY 3.0 license. Please find all the materials at GitHub repository at https://github.com/FOSS4GAcademy

Feel free to make use of these resources, translate it to Spanish etc). There are also excellent tutorials etc  available at the QGIS website http://www2.qgis.org/en/site/ , so the teachers can learn and use. 

 Sergio Acosta y Lara (our chair for South America region and Spanish thematic)  will be able to give you more specific info on Spanish language and contacts and also Manual Haro (Email -manuel.haro at zacatecas.gob.mx ) who you can contact to get ideas on various Mexican government's Open Source, Open Standards, Open Data developments.

En particular soy más de gvSIG pero apoyo todos los softwares libres (si precisás más información sobre gvSIG no dudes en contactarme: cursos, tutoriales, comunidades -incluida una mexicana-, eventos, etc., etc. http://www.gvsig.com/​). Sobre la red Geo para Todos te cuento que se han creado grupos regionales y temáticos (http://www.osgeo.org/node/1505) a los que te invito a sumarte (podés integrarte al de la región sudamericana, si te resulta más cómodo). Hello everyone,

My name is Lorrain Giddings, I work in the state university of Veracruz  (Universidad Veracruzana). I'm part of an office called "Coordinación Universitaria de Observatorios". It's an office dedicated to promote civil observatories by helping to establish the indicators that will be generated and putting together social, economical and environmental context data. We have been doing this threw QGIS and GeoServer. We now have a pretty strong gis and geoserver office so we decided to promote QGIS in our university and  we've been very successful at it. Many of the new GIS users use QGIS software and some ARCGIS user have also migrated. My job in the institution is to gather data form official sources and to make tutorials and also give GIS classes. I've been working hard on translating the procedures people do in ARCMAP and IDRIS to OSGeo different programs. I thought you'd like to know this, it's a great software and were very happy with it. We use it so much that I thought it was time to get in touch with the community, I wrote to OSGEO and they told me about this mail list. We are very happy to have joined this and are looking forward to establish some kind of communication with you guys. Maybe  we could  invite you over so you can talk about OSGeo, or even teach something about  it.  It's a great program and I'm very happy teaching and learning it. Hope to hear back from you.
