[Ica-osgeo-labs] Our charter: Education definitely, but also Research? and SERVICE

I do not have a vote either but I agree. Personally service and service learning are so important. My students complete crime mapping reports for local police departments and we will be working on a tourism map for our local chamber of commerce. Students work on real world problems and others receive the deliverables they need - win win

Great job
Tom

Related to the service component: In the "Smart City" grant proposal I am working on right now in support of our network, I am planning on drawing from a book my colleague Tom Dedeurwaerdere in Belgium recently published, called "Sustainability Science for Strong Sustainability" [1]. In it, he talks about "Transdisciplinary" research partnerships and the issue of trying to close the gap between academic research and what is really needed in the practicing world -- especially in urgent environmental or social matters where quick advances are needed. I think one of the pillars of our network should be along these lines, trying to create Geospatial research and education following a 'Commons-based Peer Production' model [2] across academia and the public, private and nonprofit sectors.

Cheers,
Charlie

As all colleagues in AB seem to be in agreement (we gave 2 weeks time for informing any disageements) to the proposed addition of "Research" into the main text, so we will add this.

Looking through Denver website, i thought the words they put it great summarizer of what we are "Education, Research, Service"

http://geospatial.ucdenver.edu/foss4g/community

In fact, what is the point of all the education and research if it is only available for a few privilaged . So service to the society and humanity is key and i think that is exactly what that brought us all together in the first place.

So i propose we add "Education, Research and Service" as our key aims in the criteria.

Please let us know if you agree with the proposed update to the text by 30th May 2015. I promise there will not be any other updates to the criteria :)

Suchith

PS: Also remember to update the wiki table at http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Edu_current_initiatives#sortable_table_id_0 with contact info etc that Helena send before 30th May, so we have everything in place for the next steps.

Hi Charlie,

We have put research also in the criteria list but maybe this need to be more highlighted

[C] There should be a website established for your Open Source Geospatial Laboratory listing current research, people, and training information. This web presence will allow other nodes in the network and the general public to understand and promote your local efforts around research and teaching of open source geospatial technologies and approaches. The website should be established within a year of the lab announcement and has to be maintained at least annually.

We can highlight importance of research in the main mission statement

Central to "Geo for All" mission is the belief that knowledge is a public good and Open Principles in Education and Research will provide great opportunities for everyone.

An educational focus is imperative. But I'd like to encourage us to think also about a collaboration on the RESEARCH front too -- we all know this is a critical component to education. Perhaps we should make that more apparent in the text on [1]?
