[Ica-osgeo-labs] Fwd: Regarding Student Awards at FOSS4G Seoul

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for clarifying this. I now understand better and it is learning curve for all of us. I will contact the OSGeo Treasurer separately to request transfer of the OSGeo Student Award money (1k USD) to the chair of the LOC responsible (For FOSS4G 2015 it will be Sanghee Shin) for running the student competitions.

Geo4All's  role is only to make sure the LOC is supported to arrange the OSGeo funding (max 1k USD per event) and whichever students are chosen by the LOC is awarded the OSGeo Student Awards. We will trust the LOCs and  will not micromanage the awards.

The LOC will be responsible to setting up the process (committees, selection etc) and making local arrangements (provide certificates, distribute the award money etc) for the student competitions etc and the chair of LOC should send a summary report to the OSGeo Board after the event. After one year based on feedbacks from Board, LOCs, Students , Community etc and lessons learnt we will aim to modify/expand this initiative for the future.

I guess the Seoul LOC must have some process in place though i do not know the details. But i trust Sanghee and the LOC on the local arrangements for the student awards.

Also it is important to note that for the OSGeo Student Awards for FOSS4G conferences (LOC is the main responsible) is very different from Geo4All Educator Awards (that has a separate global committee and process).

Please let me know if any changes/modifications needed.Thanks.

Suchith

PS: Sanghee - i know you will be now very busy with FOSS4G arrangements, but it will be really helpful if after the event you can send a short report sharing your experiences, process of running the student awards etc at FOSS4G Seoul, so that we all can learn and help future LOCs . Many thanks.

Hi Suchith,

I guess I wasn't explaining myself clearly. I as president have enough
to do, including arranging the Sol Katz this week. As I noted after
FOSS4G-Como, I am requesting that GeoForAll arrange the award (and money
transfer) for each FOSS4G event. I am sorry for being so strong on
this, but I must make a stand at some point. Please, I ask you to
arrange the payment and award for FOSS4G-Seoul and all upcoming events.

May be this second option might be easier esp. if winning students are decided at the conference time and award need to be given at the same time.
