[Geo4All] GeoForAll workshop on basic GIS at IASC 2019

This is excellent ideas. I think for the coordinated web-based half day "miniconference" across GeoForAll labs during the week of Oct 6-12, 2019, it will be good to make use of Rafael Moreno's webinar platform as he can then add the recordings also to the GeoForAll channel.

Rafael, please let us know your ideas/suggestions on this. It will be very helpful if you can suggest a day/time for this in advance , so everyone can plan accordingly .Thanks.

Best wishes,

Suchith

Charlie,

Both ideas seem to be great. I think they are both possible and of great impact. Count on us for helping this to happen.

Hi Suchith, GoeForAll colleagues,

I think we might have two options here (and perhaps do both?):

1) GeoForAll labs propose local training events for that week in their local communities

Maybe consider as a network would be to have a number of GeoForAll nodes all sign up to do some kind of training or promotional event at their lab during the week of October 6-12, 2019 -- promoting OSGeo-related products in their local communities.

2) A coordinated web-based "miniconference" across GeoForAll labs on some half day during the week of Oct 6-12, 2019?

As an example: In last year's World Commons Week, an international group led by Professor Tim Randhir led a web-based "mini-conference" where, using Zoom, Tim coordinated webinars where each global participant presented some of their work.

What could potentially be done, under this WCW 2019 banner, would be a similar half-day event where a set of GeoForAll labs present via Zoom or perhaps Rafael Moreno's webinar platform about what their lab is doing related to OSGeo-related research and education. If, for example, 5 or so GeoForAll labs stepped up to do a 30 minute presentation to report some activity that might be of interest to the community, and we run these back-to-back-to-back, it would be a GeoForAll community web miniconference. All participating labs could encourage their people to attend and we'd have 5-10 coordinated local events from the GeoForAll network. I think this would be a way to highlight GeoForAll and OSGeo to a community of possible users (typical commons research and practice involve people who study forests, fisheries, rivers, and other natural resources that have geospatial properties).

Reactions? I wonder if 5 or more labs would be willing to give 30 minute webinars that week about activities they are doing in some coordinated webinar sometime during the week of Oct 6-12?

Just brainstorming. Thanks for your interest!

Cheers
Charlie

Hi Charlie, Sergio,

Thank you for this excellent updates on IASC 2019 and this is a great opportunity to further expand synergies and collaborations with the IASC community.

I think it is a great idea to organize collective action in the GeoForAll community to run local events around OSGeospatial technologies and education during that week. I will be happy to do a webinar for this. I will also help share your call for participation with the wider geocommunity, so we get more participation for this.

Nikos, may I request you to please share this call in the GeoForAll newsletter.

Victoria, may I request you to please share this call in the OSGeo website. Thanks.

Best wishes,

Suchith

Hi Sergio,

(I had to say this publicly to the GeoForAll list).

I deserve no thanks at all -- you and your team are AWESOME. Thanks for doing this and making this important connection to the International Association for the Study of the Commons<https://iasc-commons.org/> (IASC).

GeoForAll colleagues across the globe:

Open source software (and open educational resources) are forms of Internet-based "commons" -- and that's what the IASC organization is trying to promote. A link between GeoForAll and OSGeo and the IASC community is a natural one. I'm currently organizing the second annual global World Commons Week (October 6-12, 2019). Last year's website is at (http://worldcommonsweek.org) if you want to see what happened in last year's event.

An important element of World Commons Week 2019 are establishing coordinated local events all over the world on commons related issues and practice. It would be really great if we could organize collective action in the GeoForAll community to run local events around OSGeospatial technologies and education during that week.
I would LOVE to promote GeoForAll and OSGeo in this global event. But I need help. So....

..if you'd like to propose your own GeoForAll/OSGeo related local event (e.g., a workshop on a FOSS4G topic, or a lecture, or a community mapping project, etc., etc.) for the week of October 6-12, 2019 at your own location please complete this online survey: https://forms.gle/tWnzrXjZmdJn7A687

GeoForAll<https://www.osgeo.org/initiatives/geo-for-all/> is an open geospatial science promotion network that promotes mutual exchange and cooperation among its members, through training activities, academic exchange, dissemination, availability of teaching materials, development of joint projects, among others. Its fundamental principles include: free and open software, open standards, open data, open educational resources, and free access to research publications.

It is in this context that we will hold a workshop on basic GIS with gvSIG<https://www.iasc2019.org/product/pre-conference-workshops/> as one of the activities of IASC 2019<https://www.iasc2019.org/> ( XVII Biennial IASC Conference, entitled ‘In Defense of the Commons: Challenges, Innovation, and Action’) to be held at the Pontificia Universidad Católica of Peru (Lima, Peru) from 01 to 05 July 2019. The workshop will be held prior to the conference on Friday, June 28 between 8 and 17 (Peru time, -5 UTC) in video-conference mode (remote instructor and assistants in the classroom, with on-site instructor support). After it we will put all the materials available to recreate what was done in the workshop at any time and place.

I would like to thank the organizers for allowing the opportunity to share this instance of training. Also thank Marino Carhuapoma who will officiate as a support instructor in the place. And especially my thanks to Charlie Schweik (University of Massachusetts Amherst) who made this possible to happen.
