Dear Data 4 Now Colleagues,

Please see below from Theadora Mills of GEO:

Tomorrow at the United Nations High Level Political Forum (HLPF), the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) will join a forum for Indigenous Peoples and those who work with them to discuss opportunities and challenges for increasing Indigenous Peoples engagement in the co-development, co-creation and use of Earth observations (EO) data and tools. This is in support of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to develop specific requirements for EO data, enabling widespread impact to indigenous culture, land holdings, climate change and youth empowerment.

This HLPF side event is being organised by FILAC, CANEUS, GEO, NASA, Conservation International, Agvesto, and Saraniasat. The HLPF is the main United Nations platform on sustainable development and it has a central role in the follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the global level.

Recognizing and honouring indigenous culture and knowledge, as well as supporting indigenous stewardship of the millions of acres of land under indigenous management represents a potential transformative pathway to meeting the SDGs.

This side event includes a panel of experts, with several representatives from the GEO Indigienous Alliance namely Diana Mastracci, James Rattling Leaf Sr. and Titus Letaapo, who will discuss key challenges and opportunities for inclusive engagement with indigenous peoples to advance EO design and applications for sustainable development at the community level. They will also discuss the successes and lessons learned from experience co-designing and applying EO technologies to help advance indigenous rights.

Earth observations which include satellite, aircraft and ground monitoring technologies can play a key role in supporting indigenous-led land management. However, Indigenous Peoples currently do not have equal access or opportunities to these technologies, including EO data and tools. To narrow this gap, we must understand the unique challenges indigenous communities face to use and develop EO technologies and address key topics to strengthen indigenous peoples’ rights and help unlock EO capabilities for all.

Join the discussion on July 9, 12:00 to 13:30 EST
