Hallo again,
I found the error: the map file should say

.
.
.

LAYER
  NAME 'Wind Velocity'
  DATA './00001.png'
  TYPE RASTER
  STATUS DEFAULT
 END

Cheers,
Vojko

  Hi Dan,
I have attached the jpg and png files and their world files. They are created with Global Mapper.

Here is the .map file I use. It works fine with tifs, but not with jpg or png:

  MAP
   NAME 'mn_wind'
   SIZE 800 650
   STATUS ON
   EXTENT 397500 4393500 412500 4410500
   UNITS METERS
   IMAGETYPE PNG
   TRANSPARENT TRUE

   #WEB
    #INCLUDE "../temp_directory.map"
   #END

   LAYER
    NAME 'Wind Velocity'
    DATA './00001.png'
    TYPE RASTER
    STATUS ON
   END
  END

  Thanks for your help.
  Vojko

Nope, GeoMOOSE supports PNG and JPEG fine.

Which jpg/png images are giving you problems?

      Hallo,
I use the Geomoose version "GeoMoose 1.6.1 foe MS4W". I can load tif-images into the program but no jpg- or png-images. Does my GeoMoose version not support jpg and png layers? If so, what do I have to do to enable this functionality?

      Thanks, regards,
      Vojko Daneu
