My email is being obnoxious and I'm not sure I responded to this.

Currently, the ability to change the layout of the search form in GM2 is pretty limited.  You can try some CSS tricks but that would be about the limit of it as, currently, the forms are automatically generated from the XML definition.  We had support for further customization in the 1.X series but it was ... slightly unstable and we have not forward ported the functionality yet.
