Another thing to get familiar with is the contents of the Map file.

I'ts not as simple as substituting the path to a shapefile, you must also
adjust the extents in your map file to match your project area extent, and
the extents must be in your desired projected coordinates.

Projections must also be specified in the map file for any WMS resources
you want to connect with.

Mapserver map file documentation is pretty good:
