One of the disadvantages of the measurement tools is that you can only measure one area at a time.  Once you start measuring the second area the first area that was measured disappears.   Normally this behavior is desired however, it makes it difficult to print off several measured areas onto a pdf.

For example if a user wanted to print off a map that has several areas measured out, they would need to go through the following process:


1)      Draw a polygon with the sketch tools

2)      Measure the polygon with the measure tool, hopefully clicking on the same vertices as the sketch

3)      Attribute the polygon with the area

4)      Draw the second polygon with the sketch tools

5)      Measure the second polygon with the measure tool, once again hopefully clicking on the same vertices

6)      Attribute the second polygon with the area.


If the sketch tools had the measurement information integrated into the tools a user could instead


1)      Draw in the first polygon with the sketch tool.   The sketch tool saves the polygon, and reports back the area.

2)      Attribute the polygon with the area.   - which possibly could be integrated in step one.

3)      Draw in the second polygon with the sketch tool.

4)      Attribute the second polygon with the area.

Does that make any more scene?

In this image I have drawn two polygons, and started drawing the third.  I would like the current measurement information to display in an information window.

I don't believe this would take too much time to implement.  Although adding it to the older version may be more of a hurdle than anything  :c).  The developers like moving things forward for the most part.



We've had this type of tool available in the original GeoMoose here in our office, so I tend to chuckle somewhat when the same needs keep coming up over time for stuff we've had in place from the beginning.  Just FYI, we're on GeoMoose 0.98 (or so) and still going strong.



What level of funding do you have available?

I have been asked if  if it is possible to add measurement length and area to the draw line and draw polygon sketch tools.  Essentially, this would display the same information as the measure length and measure area tools.  Please contact me If you might be interested in coding this functionality into GeoMOOSE 2.2 for one of our users.
