Hi Cameron,
personally I think this is a great idea, and cannot image somebody would be against if you use the tasks
for training. However as Alessio is the author of the file I pass your question on.
I have, though, one request. In case you use described steps please do not edit the file directly with all of your
students but copy (fork) it.

Just thinking out loud. (group of people -> a group in geonode?) How about creating a group for your students in geonode.
Every student could map something in QGIS. Publish his/her layer and those layer are combined in one
map. ... This could cover most important steps like permissions, management of resources metadata (f.e. author)
etc. Learning by doing ...
