I've recently written a new module for this. You can find it here
https://github.com/jj0hns0n/geonode/tree/table-join
It also provides the ability to join tabular data to existing polygon layers.
Im not sure how easy it is for you to integrate it into your
implementation, but happy to help guide you. Can you let me know your
exact use case and I can let you know if this is appropriate. Also let
me know what version you are using etc.
