you serve via apache? Have you checked if everything is okay with your
vhost config f.e. with your proxy settings?

      Order allow,deny
      Allow from all

    ProxyPass /geoserver http://localhost:8080/geoserver
    ProxyPassReverse /geoserver http://localhost:8080/geoserver

And if tomcat is running?
