 I'm more inclined to think this is a PostGIS issue: note the addition of a
 ST_Union call at
 https://github.com/postgis/postgis/commit/ef537b71ca46bfab44f481877b98bd59020f6acb

 Feel free to reopen if I'm mistaken.
