I'm just trying to guess so pardon me if I'm suggesting something obvious, but 
have you tried the expression without "geomFromText", for example something like 
"CONTAINS(ATTR1, Point(1 63))"?

For the Mercator projection, if it still presents, could you post the stack trace?
