Hi Alex,

Working during recent QGIS hackfest with Paolo and Giuseppe on icons for 
GRASS toolbox, we also faced problem of formats handling (pure SVG, 
Inkscape SVG, PNG). There are even problems with png rendering. 
Concerning rendering itself, which approach is better - server generated 
files or desktop (QGIS plugin)? We can try it with QGIS plugin, but 
first we should decide on tagging and repository structure. Old proposal 
[1] can be the start point to work on. Feel free to modify it.

I would like to join your svg-hacking, even virtually, but we also have 
GIS Day in Cracow today.
