Out of Memory in v.support?

I have read in SCS soil survey data in DLG-3 form without problem.  I used
v.import (which must just call v.in.dlg and v.support) which builds
all the support files as it goes.  The data files were for 7.5x7.5 min quads.
I am running on a SparcStation I with 12MB memory.
