Can anyone tell me what the result is of trying to the find the nearest 
line to a point, when the point is the junction between two lines - 
essentially I'm trying to provide a very simple 'networking' tool for our 
flood defence people. 

At the basic level they want to select a river stretch (use the code from 
d.what.vect), then the next bit, then the next, etc.
If I have the first stretch could I use the end coordinates to 'find the 
nearest line' ?
