Help with mapgen

Various people have suggested using 'mapgen' for output from GRASS. I've 
found the source on the Prime Time CD-ROM. The problem is installing - 
more precisely compiling it.

There seems to be little documentation with the source. Can anyone offer 
some words of advice on how to start.

On the same subject, could some nice person create a test HPGL file and 
bin-mail it to me. This is so I can test out our network printing, whilst 
I carry on trying to get output from GRASS/mapgen/something.
