Spectral analysis

Hi there,

Has anybody out there written any program to do Spectral analysis
of GIS maps or knows somebody who has looked into this method of 
map analysis. 
I would like to look into this technique to get a measure of information
content in the map. Any references, tips, books etc. would be welcome.
