The FreeGIS projects rpms are crafted that they can be imported into
Debian Systems using the tools called "alien".

True. But the Debian project has a problem with space.
Somebody already made GMT Debian package and data packages and
added them. It causes some debate about the size and resulted it
removal of the packages, though they should belong to Debian main.

This is why Intevation GmbH believes that a seperate Distribution 
for GIS software and data is useful and started the FreeGIS-CD (which
is packed, around 600MB). This should be as independant on the GNU/Linux
Distribution as possible, which it is. :)
