I was not aware of this separate socket library (it is part of libc
here).

That would do it..

What, no version numbers?  At least the inconsistency is consistent...

Linux => -ltk8.? -ltcl8.?
CygWin => -ltk8? -ltcl8?
Solaris => -ltk -ltcl

Was configure able to find the headers?
