if you need an "up-to-date" (1998) world map, get it here:
This is WDB II from UNEP, I have imported it into GRASS and
directly made a tar-ball from it for the "global dataset" from
GRASS sample data page. Above tar-ball *includes* the PROJ* files
and DEFAULT_WINDOW so it should be usable as own location.
