There are plans to create a generic vector import module for 5.1. This
will separate the functions of importing data from various sources and
writing it to GRASS. This has to deal a few problems at the moment. It
needs to be a piecemeal, or segmented approach, as import of very large
files is limited. A recent report was that a shapefile of 105 MB failed
to import. This requires some amount of development, quick hacks won't
do the job. But we won't have really satisfactory import/export features
till it's done.

It seems a good idea to do the same (in reverse) for output.
